Ojulowo reflects on what it means to authentically identify with, whilst revealing an ambivalence towards ones 'home' or 'culture'. It is one in a series of four ‘music video’ works that seek to ‘queery’ the music video format. I’m attempting to learn my mother tongue – Yoruba, an ethnicity and language spoken in Nigeria. Frustrated with the policing of boundaries around identities, I discover the word ‘Ojulowo’, which means genuine, original, authentic in Yoruba. This video is a playful investigation into what authenticity really is, or isn’t , pronunciation is not important here.
